O'Neil was a student at high school when she auditioned in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. She was able to make it into the top tier of contestants when judges applauded her voice. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges. However, she experienced major losses during the Top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals as she fell into the lowest 3 and 2 spots in both cases. The judges were awed by her performance, and recommended viewers to select singers who were well-known like Melissa. O'Neil's performance was so impressive that she never placed in the lower three ever again. Judge Werner predicted, after two other breathtaking performances, that O'Neil was going to be the winner in the Canadian Idol competition, as being the first female and youngest in show history after the 7th September, 2005 finals. O'Neil received a phone call right away from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her win of Canadian Idol.
